The Canadian Association for the Advancement of Netherlandic Studies, also known as CAANS, will be holding its annual meeting on May 26 and 27, 2018.
The programme will offer a rich variety of talks on all things Dutch (and Flemish): from the historical to the religious, from the literary to the artistic, from the folkloric traditions of the past to the avant-garde art movements of today, from the Dutch and Flemish immigrant experiences in North America to current political issues in the Netherlands and Belgium. In short, a smorgasbord of topics certain to appeal to a wide audience.
The CAANS 2018 keynote speaker is the multi-faceted Joke van Leeuwen, recipient of numerous literary prizes and awards, such as the Theo Thijssen Prize, the Dutch State Prize for youth literature, and the Constantijn Huygens Award. Joke van Leeuwen writes stories and poems for children, and prose and poetry for adults. She was City Poet of Antwerp in 2008 and 2009, and 'Dichter der Nederlanden' (Poet of the Netherlands) in 2015 and 2016.
