Exponential increases in problematic drug use across Canada demonstrate a critical need for a range of treatment responses. In light of sharp increases in hospitalization, accidental overdoses, and overdose deaths related to drug use, including alcohol, opioids, and prescription drugs, a range of stakeholders have called for wider access to appropriate harm reduction approaches. Harm reduction is a set of practical strategies and ideas aimed at reducing negative consequences associated with drug use. Harm reduction is also a movement for social justice built on a belief in, and respect for, the rights of people who use drugs.
